2002    “Magic of colours”

The exhibition consists of rich palette of colours composing traditional textiles, shirts, embroidery, etc., included in Bulgarian way of life.

  
2002    “Japanese Kimono - A Sense for Beauty"

The kimono of Japan with its unique and intricate artistry is not only enjoyed for the beauty it creates when worn, but is also appreciated as an object of superior fine-arts handicraft when kimonos are often displayed and hung open on a special hanger. It is the minute detail and sophisticated techniques, such as embroidery and dyeing employed by the professional craftsmen of Japan, that have made the kimono an ornament. The aesthetic sense of the Japanese, who value a sense of season, of fortune, of long life and the healthy growth of a child, is wonderfully expressed in the patterns of the kimono.

  
2001    “The Karakachans in Bulgaria "

It shows aspects of traditional way of living of a small minority group, named Karakachans, until 1954 when they have to settle down. They are presented by traditional clothing, fabrics, jewellery, tools of labour, archival and recent photographs and documents. The paintings of N. Zarev give idea of some of the most specific features of karakachan culture and traditions.

  
2000 - 2001    “Folk Culture and Christianity"

On the occasion of the 2000th anniversary of Christianity. It represents Christian symbols and signs in bulgarian folk art – in traditional clothing and jewellery, fabrics and embroidery, wrought copper and pottery. Church plate, icons, crosses are also exhibited. There is a display of the most important Christian holidays – Christmas, Easter, the day of St George, Holy Assumption – which go along with ancient folk beliefs.

  
1999    “Magic of Colour"

It shows bulgarian traditional knitting works – sockets, gloves, elements of clothing. A great variety of ornaments, ancient symbols, knitting techniques and colour design is displayed. It’s main objective is to present the skills bulgarian women.

  
1999    “Between the Visible and the Invisible"

It represents traditional Bulgarian calendar holidays from XIX – XX c. Folk beliefs and customs are demonstrated by authentic costumes, textiles, jewels, ceramic and copper vessels, ritual objects together with written songs, legends, photographs. The exhibition is shown also in Kittsee, Austria. Catalogue in German language.

  
1999    “Armenians in Bulgaria"

On the occasion of 1700th anniversary of Christianity in Armenia. It shows weekdays, beliefs and traditions of Armenians in Bulgaria as well as the variety of armenian socio-political organisations. The exhibition includes costumes, ritual objects, church plate, craftsman works and instruments, incunabula, documents, photographs, etc. It is shown in cooperation with other museums and subsidized by the PHARE program. Catalogue in Bulgarian, Armenian and English language.

  
1999    “Beauty and Secrets"

It shows the main styles of bulgarian traditional female costumes, its design and elements. Festive costumes as well as separate parts of them (shirts, upper cloths, kerchiefs) from all Bulgarian ethnic territories are presented. The exhibits are accompanied by patterns of clothing and E. Lepavtzova’s aquarelles.

  
1998    “From the Life of the Banat Bulgarians"

It is dedicated to the Bulgarian Catholics. The historical past of the population of Chiprovtsi (Bulgaria), Vinga and Beshenov (Banat) is revealed by the means of costumes, embroidery, carpets, photographs, documents. It is shown in cooperation with other museums.

  
1998    “The Holy Path.
            Bulgarian Jews through the Centuries "

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the State of Israel. It shows weekdays, beliefs and tradition of the Bulgarian Jewish community. Among the exhibits are ritual objects, incunabula, textiles, photographs and documents, as well as the prizes awarded to Bulgarian King Boris III for saving the Bulgarian Jews. It is shown in cooperation with other museums. The exhibition is a winner of a Soros subsidy.

  
1997    “Life-giving Water "

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Ethnographic Institute and Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. It shows the results of the Institute’s ethnographic researches of Bulgarian regions. The different regions are also presented by typical costumes, jewels, craftsman products.

  
1997    “Chiprovtsi Carpets"

It shows authentic and contemporary carpets from the town of Chiprovtsi, dyeing and weaving techniques, as well as photographs and documents showing the development of carpet manufacture in Chiprovtsi.

  
1996    “The Cut up Yard. Weekdays and Holidays
            of the Bulgarians
            in the Western Border Regions "

The exhibition shows daily life, beliefs and festivities of Bulgarians in the regions of Tsaribrod, Bosilegrad, Trun, Kjustendil. The exhibits are female, male and children’s costumes, fabrics, jewels, documents and photographs.
It has been shown in Blagoevgrad and Radomir.

  
1996    “Hope for Well-being "

It shows traditonal folk beliefs and rituals which take place on the festive days of Bulgarian's calendar. It shows various customs on the days of Christmas, Easter, of St John the Baptist, etc. together with lots of written songs and archival photographs.

  
1995    “Magic for Love "

The exhibition demonstrates the bulgarian traditional aspiration for love and happy family life. Folk beliefs are presented by the means of costumes, fabrics, embroidery, amulets with magical power, etc.
It has been also shown in Vienna.

  
1995    “Gypsies in Times Past "

Represents the life and beliefs of the gypsies in Bulgaria from the late Õ²Õ and early ÕÕ c. Archival photographs and documents, authentic objects and craftsman products of gypsies show aspects of their way of living. Written texts of gypsy songs, tales, legends and myths are also included. This exhibition has been displayed in Rousse, Turgovishte, Varna, Gabrovo, Budapest.

  
1995    “The World of the Bulgarian Woman "

The main idea of this exhibition is to show important role of the Bulgarian woman in the traditional society and the changes in this role that take place in the period of National Revival and early XX c. The exhibits date from the same period and most of them are of unique artistic, historical and ethnographic value. The exhibition has been shown in Tokyo in 1996 – 1997 expanded by a collection of traditional wedding costumes.

  
1995    “Eugenia Lepavzova"

On the occasion of the anniversary of the artist who has devoted 50 years of her life to Bulgarian ethnography. Her aquarelles are a genuine source of information for Bulgarian traditional costumes, house and church architecture, etc. They belong to NEM and private collections.

1994    “Wrought Copper and Ceramics –
            Parallels and Development ”

The exhibition shows the variety of forms, as well as the common features of the two crafts producing vessels for food, drink and interior decoration.

  
1994    “Saxe-Coburg and Gotha’s Heritage
            in Bulgaria"

The exhibition presents part of the Museum collection of gifts from the royal family and pieces of the interior decoration – mantel clocks, goblin tapestries, etc. Traditional art works – gifts to the royal family (costumes, embroidery, copper vessels, weapons) are also displayed. Exhibition catalogue in Bulgarian, English and Spanish language.

  
1994    “Cryptochristianity"

Displayed in the town of Smoljan. The exhibition presents various objects with christian symbols on them from the daily life of Bulgarians under the Ottoman rule.

  
1994    “Christmas in Europe "

NEM takes part in an international exhibition in Vienna, displaying ritual objects for the Christmas festivities in Bulgaria.

 

  
1994    “Bulgarian Wedding Costumes "

The exhibition presents the beauty and variety of both female and male traditional bulgarian wedding costumes together with wedding ritual objects – jewels, kerchiefs, ritual breads, ceramics from the period of ÕV²²² – early ÕÕ c. The costumes are shown in the context of wedding rituals. The display is accompanied by archival photographs, written wedding songs texts, ethnographic records of magic words for love and separation.

  
1992    “Bulgarian Antiquity from Macedonia”

It displays authentic traditional costumes, fabrics, embroideries, copper and ceramic vessels, woodcarving, church plates, etc. Lots of archival photographs and folklore texts tell about the life of Bulgarian population in Macedonia during XVIII – XIX c.

  
1992     “On the Occasion of NEM’s Centennial ”

This exhibition shows the major collections of the Museum and the most remarkable exhibits that have been collected throughout the years. Exhibition catalogue – Traditional Bulgarian costumes and Art, Sofia, 1994.

  
1991    “Bulgaria – Tradition and Beauty”

The predominant orientation of the exhibition is to present a comprehensive survey of the characteristics of traditional national costumes. The wealth of local and regional variants in the clothing is presented as they occur in various regions, districts and settlements of Bulgarian people. It has also been exhibited in Liverpool and Leeds.
